Story

This page is in memory of Janet Miller, who dedicated over 35 years of her life to the British Horse Society as the Bridleways Officer for Surrey.

Horses were at the centre of Janet’s life and she worked tirelessly to improve access to the countryside for riders. Her decades of dedication as a volunteer were recognised by BHS in 1990 with their Award of Merit. Her many years of service were also recognised by President, Martin Clunes, in 2014.

Janet believed riders should be able to enjoy safe, well-maintained and connected routes. She helped create the 37-mile Downs Link route and coordinated efforts to reestablish rural horse rides after the devastating storm in 1987. She ensured that bridleway access was safe and appropriate when new roads were built, including securing new bridges with equestrian railings, mounting blocks and the resurfacing of paths during the construction of the A3 and M25. To her, access work was vital to protect our horse culture and heritage.

Janet was a much-loved District Commissioner of the Sandown Chase Branch of the Pony Club, supporting children from every walk of life, to have fun riding in the countryside, and learn how to improve their horsemanship.

She enjoyed riding every day in her local woods and completed numerous charity Long Distance Rides, such as from the North York Moors to Wales, and from Southampton to Liverpool. She also drove, was a member of Windsor Park Equestrian Club and ran many driving events on her farm at Cobham.

Thank you for your donation the the BHS Ride Out Fund for Access in Janet’s memory, which recognises a life shaped by horses, farming and the countryside, and a dedication to improving access for future generations.
