Story

The Get Busy Living Centre provides expert physiotherapy, specialist personal training, support, mentoring and advice to people suffering a life-changing injury through sport. It's a unique facility which opened its doors in 2018 and is the brainchild of founder and former England and Leicester Tigers rugby player Matt Hampson, who himself experienced a life-changing injury in 2005 leaving him paralyzed from the neck down, aged just 20.

Building a sense of community is central to the Matt Hampson Foundation. As part of this community, beneficiaries are able to draw on the experience and knowledge of others who have been on a similar journey as they develop the tools and skills they need to ‘get busy living’ again - a key motto of the foundation!

Personally, I’ve had multiple surgeries over the last 16 years years from sport accidents and general wear and tear.

September 5, 2022 is my sobriety date. That’s when my journey back to sport and movement began. Movement is medicine. It’s key to healing the body and, more importantly, the mind. Taking this new life one day at a time is how I built a new foundation.

At Ironman Lake Placid in July 2025, on the second lap of the bike, my right side went extremely numb. I lost feeling in my right thumb and two fingers, and spasms started in my right arm, upper back and neck. My first bike lap took under 3 hours; the second took nearly 5. I made it to transition and ground out the rest of the race, finishing in 15:00:11. That was far beyond the goal I’d set, but I’m still proud I finished.

On December 30, 2025, I had an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) at C5/6 and C6/7. Since then I’ve been working with my physio to get back, and I’ve missed sport and having an ‘A’ race to train for. London is that race.

What matters most to me is raising funds so other people have the chance to return to sport and a mobile life. Equipment, prostheses and accessible homes cost an incredible amount of money.

My mission statement is simple:

Raising funds to support people in embracing their God-given ability to move, no matter how that movement has been restricted. Movement is medicine. Get busy living!.
