Story
**UPDATE: NEW CHALLENGE DATE - 5th & 6th AUGUST.
After a chaotic weekend involving our bus breaking down and lightning on Scafell Pike preventing our group from even attempting to summit, I was gutted that our group was unable to complete all 3 peaks in the 24 hours. It was out of my control and I gave it my all. I know had things gone more smoothly I would have been on track to complete all 3 in the 24 hours, with my time of 4:38 to complete Ben Nevis. But knowing I could have done it wasn’t enough for me, not only was I doing this to raise money in memory of my Nana, but it was a personal goal I’d set for myself to achieve this year. So I’m doing the National 3 Peaks Challenge again on 5th & 6th August. And hopefully I can raise even more money for Myeloma UK.
I’ve been overwhelmed with people’s generosity and am so pleased with how much I’ve managed to raise for Myeloma UK. As one of the lesser known blood cancers and the only charity to focus solely on the disease, with no government or NHS funding, every penny raised is so important and goes towards their vital research towards finding a cure. Being able to raise awareness of the disease is equally as important as the money donated. For more information on Myeloma head to https://www.myeloma.org.uk/understanding-myeloma/what-is-myeloma/ **
_______________
On the 8th and 9th July I’ll be taking on the National 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for Myeloma UK in memory of my wonderful Nana, Katie Dobbing.
My Nana was diagnosed with Myeloma in her early 80s and whilst the disease wasn’t the primary cause of her death, it did ultimately lead to the decline in her health and quality of life. Myeloma is a blood cancer arising from plasma cells. It is a relatively unknown cancer, I hadn’t heard of it until my Nana was diagnosed. But at any one time there are around 24,000 people living with Myeloma in the UK. It accounts for 15% of blood cancers, and 2% of all cancers. Myeloma research has come a long way over the years and while treatment can be very effective at controlling the disease, unfortunately there is currently no cure.
The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Yr Wyddfa aka Snowdon) within 24 hours. The total walking distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 10,052ft (3064 metres) with 462 miles of driving between. Only 40% of people achieve the challenge within this time frame and I’m hoping to be one of them!
I lost my Nana in April 2022 and it made it one of the hardest years of my life. Spending time outdoors was one of the ways I coped with my grief and my Nana was always on the go, so this seemed like a fitting challenge to honour her memory, especially with it finishing in Wales, where I spent a lot of my childhood with her. I know if she were still here she’d be asking if she could tag along too.
Any donations and shares are massively appreciated. I’ve covered all the transport costs myself so 100% of the money donated will go to the charity.
Thank you for visiting my page!
Lots of love, Jasmine xxx
