Story
Over 30 years ago, I found myself in serious trouble in the water and had to be rescued by an incredible team.
Although I was thankfully safe, the experience left me with a fear of swimming that followed me for decades.
Two years ago, I decided enough was enough. I was going to learn to swim.
Thanks to a wonderful trauma-specialist swimming teacher, Susan Cheshire, and many, many hours in the pool, I slowly began to overcome those fears.
Then a friend persuaded me to take on a Half Ironman.
Today, I completed it!
The swim involved just over 2km in choppy, stormy seas. Not exactly the gentle introduction to open-water swimming I might have hoped for!
And despite a double puncture and nearly being pulled out of the race, I made it to the finish line.
The RNLI is a cause that feels particularly close to my heart. I know firsthand what it means to be frightened in the water and how important it is to have people willing to help when things go wrong.
I’m also fundraising in memory of two wonderful friends I’ve lost very suddenly in recent weeks.
Please consider donating, whether it’s £1 or something more generous.
The RNLI’s lifesaving crews and water safety work make an extraordinary difference.
Thank you for helping others get home safely.
