Story

Bloodrun Emergency Voluntary Service (EVS) is a blood bike charity established in 2010, to provide a free, voluntary courier service to North East NHS hospitals and Trusts. The charity is staffed by unpaid volunteers who give up their time in order to provide this vital service to the NHS saving them much needed money and providing a professional transportation service.

In the last year a total of 2,481 calls were received and completed by Bloodrun EVS completely free of charge to the local NHS trusts. This includes routine collections, relays, movement of equipment and urgent collections. The fleet of dedicated vehicles including bikes, cars and vans travelled over 143,723 miles in order to deliver vital services and have saved the NHS over £87,815 on taxi costs alone.

Although Bloodrun EVS service to the NHS is complete FREE, there are still operating costs (fuel, insurance, tyres, vehicle maintenance, new vehicles and stationary) and every year it costs almost £30,000 to keep the fleet of bikes and cars running.

Bloodrun EVS is ran by 76 unpaid volunteers who dedicate their free time to transporting products and responding to urgent calls whenever required. Bloodrun EVS receives no government funding or funding from the NHS and rely solely on donations from the general public and local businesses. With the ever increasing need for the NHS to save money without compromising patient care, the demands upon the charity grow each year.
