Jean's sprint triathlon for Friends of Kipkelion

Jean Kyrke-Smith is raising money for Friends of Kipkelion

Sprint Triathlon - 750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run · 4 March 2026

We are a small charity run entirely by volunteers in the UK. We focus on a remote rural area of Kenya called Kipkelion. It’s a mountainous and somewhat neglected region with about 300,000 inhabitants, most of whom live by subsistence farming. Many people in Kipkelion live miles from the nearest hospital, and most schools are poorly equipped. We work in partnership with a locally based Kenyan NGO to provide clean water and sanitation in schools in Kipkelion, to ensure that pupils (especially girls) can attend school regularly. We also provide resources to bring basic medical facilities to the remote areas of the region, in collaboration with local health officials. We are also active in encouraging the local people in their efforts to eradicate FGM in the area. All of our work is done in partnership with the local community and is guided by their decisions as to their priorities, so that all of our projects are designed to be completely sustainable and of permanent benefit to the community.

Story

All my friends know that I’ve never been into sport…! However, having visited this rural area of Kenya last year and seen the wonderful work of this small charity, I have decided to train for (what is for me!) a rather demanding challenge - taking on a Sprint Triathlon at the gym. This consists of a 750m swim, followed by a 20km cycle and 5km run. I hope to complete this in 2 hours. (An elite time is 1hr15)

Having had a successful cataract operation last year and having met a wonderful surgeon, Dr Korir, at the hospital in Kipkelion, it would be marvellous if I could raise money towards an operating microscope which would enable him to carry out sight-saving surgery in an area where there is great need. Every penny will go straight to this project.

I will never do anything like this again! And will be so grateful if you can make a donation. Thank you in anticipation.
