Story

Our staff team has signed up for the Mighty Stride. Any support you are able to provide will be greatly appreciated.

The West Lothian 50+ Network is a vibrant, member-led local charity supporting older people through a wide range of social, educational, and recreational activities. We play a crucial role in addressing the needs of the region's growing older population, particularly in combating social isolation and promoting active engagement. Our offerings include monthly meetings, holidays, theatre visits, day trips, and over 70 special interest groups from walking, exercise and language classes to music, crafts, and games. The organisation is run by volunteers with support from a small staff team, and aims to promote wellbeing, lifelong learning, and connection.

Recent data underscores the importance of such initiatives:

Rapidly Aging Population: West Lothian's population of individuals aged 75 and over is projected to increase by nearly 39.4% between 2018 and 2028, outpacing the Scottish average of 25.4%.

Prevalence of Loneliness: A 2023 survey by Age Scotland revealed that 58% of Scots over the age of 50 experience loneliness most or all of the time, with 47% reducing social activities due to financial constraints.

Health Implications of Isolation: Loneliness among older adults is linked to deteriorating mental and physical health, including increased risks of high blood pressure and dementia.

The West Lothian 50+ Network urgently needs funding as we receive no core financial support and rely entirely on memberships, volunteers and fundraising to operate. As our older population grows, so does the demand for our services, over 70 activities that tackle loneliness, improve wellbeing, and foster community. Without funding, we risk scaling back vital programmes that many older adults rely on for connection, health, and purpose. Your support helps us keep this lifeline alive for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.
