Story
My bro Andy was admitted to the Martlets Hospice in September 2021 for some respite care. Sadly, the lung cancer progressed so aggressively that he never got to go back home, and passed away in October 2021 at the age of 45, leaving his wife Sally and their two young girls.
The care that the Martlets Hospice gave my brother was beyond outstanding- nothing was too much effort for them, even the small things like knowing how he took his coffee and what his favourite biscuit was, were taken care of. Not to mention the amazingly professional medical support and care he received, especially with pain management.
Even though his stay was during Covid restrictions, the Martlets made absolutely sure that his family were able to visit as much as possible, whilst keeping the hospice safe and covid free for the other residents and staff.
Hospices in the UK receive very little, if any, government funding, and rely mostly on fundraising campaigns, donations, and legacies.
I am running the Brighton Half marathon on the 25th February 2024 as part of #teammartlets to raise money in memory of my brother Andy, so that others who need their care can receive the best treatment possible.
Andy wasn't religious, but there was one 'prayer' or mantra that we recited over and over during his cancer treatment and stay in the Martlets:
F*** YOU CANCER!!!!
I would love to raise £700- this would pay for one patient to be cared for for 24 hours in their inpatient unit (Andy was a resident for 30 days), or at the very least £250, which would pay for three counselling sessions for bereaved family members such as his two young daughters.
Thank you so much in advance, and if you are around on the day, it would be great to see you and hear some cheers :)
Lots of love from Jen xxx
