Story
My friend Peter has agreed to do our "Love your enemy" sponsorship challenge for STEP, he will be wearing a Luton football shirt for the day on Sunday 11th January, and he shares the story of his involvement with Watford FC below.
When our son, Andrew (aged 7), was thinking about his birthday present in 1986, he asked if we could go to see a professional football match. We live midway between Watford and Luton, and at that time, knowing nothing about football, I asked which he thought would be best. He replied "Watford"! Thankfully! Thereafter, we had season tickets until he left home to be married in 2013. In the meantime, I took early retirement towards the end of the 1990s from my job as company secretary to a merchant bank in London and the chairman of the bank, being financial adviser to Watford Football Club, put my name forward to the Club when a vacancy for company secretary occurred in the Spring of 2000. I was delighted! It was agreed that we would have a trial period of a month, so I joined the Club, but to this day I have never heard any more about the trial period! Thus I was appointed as company secretary of Watford F.C. in the spring of 2000, together with its other associated companies, and last year celebrated 25 years of service with Club, at which time the Club very generously gave my family and me a wonderful and very memorable celebration. It has been a wonderful journey for me, full of special memories, pleasure and enjoying the Club's generosity and hospitality to my family and me, but not without it challenges from time to time! It has been a great and enjoyable privilege to be associated with the Club over so many years. Thoughts of retirement from the position come into my mind from time to time, but for the present, it continues to be a wonderful experience to continue with my association and involvement with the Club.
Over all those years, there has been very competitive rivalry between Watford F.C. and Luton F.C. All great fun, but, nevertheless, to be taken very seriously! At the moment, Watford are ahead of Luton in the league tables - long may it be so! Carry on with the good work, Watford!
