Story
When I was 17, I had one dream: to become a United States Marine. But on December 28, 1989, that dream nearly ended. I was accidentally shot in the left shoulder. My humerus was shattered, my shoulder muscles shredded, and my future looked bleak.
My parents worked hard, but we had no medical insurance. Charleston Memorial Hospital saved my life, and my mom—my hero—learned how to care for my wounds every single day until they healed from the inside out. She never gave up on me.
Then came a miracle: Shriners Children’s Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts. They performed the surgeries and physical therapy that gave me back the use of my arm. Because of their compassion and care, three years later, I achieved my dream and joined the Marine Corps. I went on to serve our country for 30 years.
Now, 37 years later, Shriners is still helping me stay active. On my 54th birthday, I’m taking on something I’ve never done before—the MOAB Trailfest: three days, three races (13.5, 16.75, and 14.6 miles). It’s a challenge, but I learned long ago that you never know what you can do until you try.
When I signed up, I saw the option to join Wander Project and raise money for a charity of my choice. That was an easy decision: Shriners Children’s Hospital. They changed my life, and now I want to help them change someone else’s.
My goal is to raise $3,000 for Shriners—so they can help the next young person achieve their dreams through compassionate care. Please consider donating and sharing this message. Every dollar makes a difference.
Help me help Shriners help the next Jerry Gomes.
Thank you for your love, care, and support.
