Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses – who we continually support and develop – provide life-changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Story

Between the 3rd-12th September this year, Jess Pritchard and Amber Hicks will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Dementia UK.

We would both greatly appreciate your support by donating to our Just Giving page and for your time to also read the following:

Dementia UK

Dementia affects people in any number of ways, depending on the type of dementia they have. The impact can be physical, emotional, and psychological, and profoundly change the practicalities of everyday life for both the sufferer as well as their loved ones.

Dementia UK is a specialist dementia nurse charity. Their nurses, known as “Admiral Nurses” provide life changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. For those affected, these nurses are a lifeline; enabling sufferers to remain independent for longer, and also provide the support to the family members, or those providing care, so they have the strength and tools to cope day after day.

Currently 1 in 3 people born in the UK this year will develop dementia in their lifetime. There are 944,000 as of 2022 in the UK suffering, with this forecast to increase to over one million by 2030 and over 1.6 million by 2050. This an ever-present disease and one that desperately requires further research and funding.

Both of us are honoured to be fundraising for Dementia UK and would be eternally grateful for any support that you may be able to give us as we embark on this challenge of a lifetime.

The Challenge

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world at 5895m / 19,341 ft heigh and is considered an extreme altitude trek. Acute Mountain Sickness which includes dizziness, headache, nausea and delirium is just one of the many challenges we will face, along with 7 days of 7-16 hours hikes, -15 degree temperatures and mountain side tent camping. This will undoubtedly push both of us to our physical and mental limits but this a challenge we are excited to face and one we are determined to achieve so to raise awareness for this vital cause.

Thank you!

Jess & Amber
