Lucy and I are running the Leeds Half Marathon in support of Sue Ryder — a charity that holds a very special place in my heart.

To me, my Grandma was always gently fierce: strong, brilliant and quietly determined. But it wasn’t until the last few months of her life that I truly realised how many people saw her that way too.

My Grandma was a Marie Curie nurse. Caring for others wasn’t just her job — it was who she was. She dedicated her life to giving comfort, dignity and compassion to people at their most vulnerable, working alongside and training so many incredible nurses and carers along the way.

When she was later diagnosed with cancer, life came full circle. Gweneth — someone she had once worked with and trained — became her palliative care nurse, now working for Sue Ryder. Even her close friends, retired nurses themselves, came to help care for her too. It was a powerful reminder that nursing isn’t something you ever switch off. It’s a way of life. Hearing their stories and seeing the love and respect they had for her made me feel immensely proud.

Because of her nursing background, she knew exactly what was going to happen to her. She understood every stage of what lay ahead — and despite that knowledge, she faced it with extraordinary strength, courage and grace. She was a strong woman and a huge inspiration to me.

Sue Ryder supports people and families through the hardest moments of their lives, offering comfort, dignity and kindness when it’s needed most. Running this half marathon is my way of honouring my Grandma, thanking those who cared for her, and helping to ensure others receive the same compassionate care.

I’m incredibly grateful to be doing this alongside one of my best friends, Lucy. Without hesitation, she agreed to run with me for Sue Ryder — offering her support, encouragement and friendship every step of the way.
