Story

On the 20th of October, our lovely Dad became the brightest star in the sky. He was the most loving Dad to myself and my three brothers and we were lucky enough to celebrate my Mum and Dad’s 40th wedding anniversary, this August.

A little over 6 years ago, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer. He underwent treatment at the Royal Marsden. As a family, we were so grateful for the extended time we were given to spend together. There were many ups and downs along Dad’s treatment journey, but his resilience and his ability to carry on were an example to us all.

His final few months saw many hospital stays, but he always wanted to be where he belonged - at home. He continued to receive the most compassionate care from our very own Florence Nightingale, our Mum, who was supported by the Princess Alice home care team.

In Dad’s final few days, he was transferred from home to the hospice. A time which we all knew would eventually come but wished it wouldn’t.

We spent the last few days of Dad’s life on earth all together. It was a privilege to be gifted this time and space. My little dog Ardboe (who is named after the place in Ireland where my Dad was from) was able to be with us too, bringing a little bit of joy as we sat by Dad’s bedside.

It is hard to put into words how grateful we are that our Dad was cared for with such dignity and compassion. Every single member of staff, from nurses to doctors, caterers to volunteers, couldn't have done any more for him. Nothing was too much. The level of care he received during the saddest time was perfect. The people who looked after him are very special people to do that job. It was strange to feel so comforted in a place where you have never been to before and with people you have never met. I feel like I can’t repay the Princess Alice Hospice because what they provided for my Dad and us all over the last few days, is something you can't put a price on.

Many of you will remember that I ran the London Marathon in 2023 for the Royal Marsden, after being granted a last minute place. Although I missed the application for 2025, I wrote a letter to the Princess Alice Hospice, who explained that they had filled all the places for London 2025. At the beginning of December, a space became available!

I am delighted to have this opportunity to run the marathon again - this time in memory of our star in the sky, my Dad, and to raise money for a hospice which has a very place in all of ‘The Devlins’ hearts.

One of the many things my Dad taught me is that I can do hard things. I want to continue to do this and live my life to the fullest, making him even more proud.

Any sponsorship, no matter how small, is hugely appreciated.

Doing it for Dad.
