Jes SWIMS for Friends of Alfie Martin

Jessica Talpade is raising money for Friends of Alfie Martin
In memory of Alfie Martin

Swimming the distance of the English Channel in a public pool!

Run entirely by volunteers, we fund vital, life-saving equipment for the Leeds Centre for Newborn Care, helping over 1,600 critically ill newborns each year. Every penny you give goes directly to support critically sick babies across the Yorkshire region.

Story

JES DOESN’T SWIM

JES DOESN’T SWIM IN PUBLIC POOLS FOR SURE!

But… Jes is going to swim the length of the English Channel over the course of 7 weeks in a public pool (shock horror)

The plan is to swim 3 miles a week over 7 weeks. But big kudos if it’s completed in 6. That is anticipating between 17-20 hours of solid swimming!

Currently Jes doesn’t even own a suitable swimsuit or a pair of swim goggles!

This will be a big challenge, from zero to hero, for charity (physically and overcoming the public pool phobia!)

Why….

The friends of Alfie Martin is a very important charity to me. Alfie (my cousin) passed away due to medical negligence - he needed specialist transportation to the Leeds Teaching Hospital for critical care. No transportation was available and after a tortuous wait Alfie was transferred, but sadly died.

My aunty and her amazing team have fundraised for specialist equipment for the neonatal ward at the LGI since then and recently hit the £1m fundraising milestone! Meaning critically ill new born babies have had access to specialist equipment at the LGI that the NHS couldn’t buy themselves.

Even at £1m in specialist equipment - the list continues.

I want to kick start the fundraising towards for the next £1m and chapter of Alfie’s charity. No baby, or mother, should be without the best equipment possible.

I am hoping to raise £100 per mile !!

Please donate generously - I’ve picked this challenge as this will be a REAL challenge and commitment. I don’t swim and hate public pools - I am doing this because the cause is so close to my heart.

Thank you 🙏
