70.3 Ironman Weymouth
So it started in December 2022, when I spontaneously decided to sign myself up for the 70.3 Half Ironman in Weymouth... which is taking place on the 17th of sep. Now fast forward to March... I still haven't started training and was starting to wonder why I had ever signed myself up for it. However at this time my wonderful granny, Jenny Gibson finally passed away after her battle with cancer. However this isn't the sad tale but one of a fighter, for Jenny was originally diagnosed with stage 3 cancer 14 years ago, and given 5 years left to live. I was 6 a the time. Now Jenny, ever the optimist decided that 5 years wasn't long enough, and took part in a trial of a new drug. This drug managed to give her a life for 9 more years than was predicted, meaning that I was able to make memories with her that I will never forget. Now if any of you knew me as a child... as much as I tried to pretend otherwise, I never was that talented in the sporting realm (I once pretended to twist my ankle so I could get out of an inter schools 400m race). So the idea of swimming 2km, followed by cycling 90km then running 21km scares the living daylight out of me. But, I realised it could be a way to share the story of my granny and hopefully raise awareness and some money for cancer research, so they can continue to develop new drugs to help others continue their fight against cancer. And so I decided now its my time to fight and do this race in memory of my grandmother, who also refused to give up.
