Two years ago my extremely fit, gym going, healthy eating, non-smoking mum had a routine hygienist appointment that would change her life. I'll never forget receiving the phone call from my Dad to confirm that mum had been diagnosed with Mouth cancer and that it needed operating on ASAP. Mum has always suffered with lychen planus, which had unfortunately turned cancerous.

A month later, mum was taken into hospital and underwent extensive surgery which saw her in ICU for 6 days. She had a bone removed from her lower leg to form the new jaw bone and a skin graft to form her new palette. During her 6 days in ICU, mum had to learn to walk, talk, drink and eat all over again due to the bone removal and her having a tracheotomy...the whole thing was extremely surreal!

The team at Guy's hospital in London have been incredible to say the least and my mum is forever greatful for them all. She has received incredible care, pre, during, and post surgery, from all departments (head & neck, oral medicine, and dental implants).

My mum was told early on that her life would change forever and that is has. She is an absolute hero and is doing exceptionally well, but will continue to be monitored from now onwards.

Mouth cancer seems to be affecting a large number of people, but has slightly less of a following and support in comparison to others, which is why I want to raise money and awareness for the cause.
