Story
Over the course of 5 days, we will walk the full 127 miles of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.
We are raising money for both The Matthew22 Fund and The UK Sepsis Trust.
If you wish to support on the walk please contact Jonathan or Patrick, and we will see if we can arrange something.
About Sarah:
Sarah was a registered general nurse at Aintree Hospital, dedicated to caring for her patients. At 41, she became a mother to Órla — her miracle baby — whom she adored completely.
On 18th February 2025, Sarah was admitted to Aintree Hospital with shortness of breath and diagnosed with pneumonia. Later that day, doctors made the decision to place her in a medically induced coma. Before she went under, she asked her sister Sonya to look after Órla. That evening, Sarah was transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester, where she was placed on an ECMO machine to support her lungs.
For six weeks, the family made the daily journey from Liverpool to Wythenshawe, visiting Sarah in the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit. Throughout this time, little Órla asked for her mummy every day, and the family gently reassured her that the doctors were doing their best.
Sadly, on 1st April 2025 at 5pm, Sarah passed away, surrounded by her loving family.
Sonya has since been granted a Special Guardianship Order for Órla, ensuring she is safe, secure, and lovingly cared for until she turns 18.
About Matthew:
Matthew was a driven individual and highly successful academically, following successful GCSEs and A-Levels he opted to study maths at Nottingham university.
During his second year in December 2019 he went to the doctor's about pains in his shoulder. An X ray revealed this to be bone cancer.
He started chemotherapy in January 2020, and found out that the cancer had spread to his lungs. Complications regarding the placement of the tumour meant that he had to have his arm amputated. The cancer never left, and he passed away in February 2022.
Originally set up as a specialist fund with The Bone Cancer Trust, in October 2023 The Matthew22 Fund became a registered charity. We aim to support other charities to ensure families do not go through what we have, and to date have raised over £160,000 and featured on TV!
