Story

Thank you for visiting our (now updated) JustGiving page!

We did it!!!!!! Yay

After a year of preparation and many training walks, at 7.15am on Sunday 27th September ( after 7 1/2 days of trekking) we successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa at 5,895 meters! And the tallest freestanding mountain in the world!! (For comparison, Scafell Pike stands at just 978 meters.)

This was the hardest thing either of us have ever done, particularly the summit day when we walked for 14 hours. The air at altitude is like nothing we’ve ever experienced before and just doing everyday things like getting dressed or in and out of your tent can leave you breathless. The days are blisteringly hot especially on the lower slopes and at night temperatures fall well into minus figures with icy cold winds. We even had some sleet and snow flurries! The experience though was absolutely amazing and not one we will ever forget. Our guides and the wider support team were superb looking after us every step of the way and we cannot thank them enough for helping us to achieve our dream.

Thanks to all who have donated to help the wonderful work undertaken by Give a Duck. We shall be forever grateful for your support xxx

Here’s a bit about the charity from our “pre trek” fundraising page. Any further donations would be greatly appreciated….

While this was a self-funded trip, we saw it as a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for Give a Duck, a charity close to our hearts. Neil, who serves as a trustee, supports this organisation, which provides specially adapted ducks with medical lines and ports to facilitate play-based therapy for children undergoing cancer treatment.

We’ve seen the incredible impact of Give a Duck firsthand when our godson Harry, then just 7 years old, was diagnosed with leukemia. We vividly remember him using his Chemo Duck to explain his treatment to us. It’s astonishing how something so simple can be so empowering, helping to alleviate fear and anxiety. We're passionate about ensuring that every child facing a devastating diagnosis can benefit from this remarkable educational tool. Give a Duck helps children understand their treatment, which is crucial—after all, we naturally fear what we don’t understand.

The Foundation's mission is to ensure every child diagnosed with cancer in the UK receives a Chemo Duck. Please help us support them in achieving this goal.

Every £25 we raise will provide another child with a duck.
