Story
Glasgow Caledonian University is marking 150 years since our founding institution first opened its doors, and at the heart of that history is something we’re still known for today: welcoming students from all backgrounds and giving them the support they need to thrive.
Not all students have family behind them or a support network cheering them on. Over the years we’ve seen a 15% rise in students asking for help, and last year 75% of applicants to our donor‑funded scholarships were care‑experienced or estranged from their families. These young people often come to university completely on their own, without the safety net and family encouragement that many of us take for granted.
That’s why I’m so proud of the sector‑leading scholarships GCU has created. They don’t just offer financial support - they open doors to life‑changing experiences, mentoring, and networks that help students build confidence and a future they can be excited about. As our founding donor Sir Alex always says, giving someone a start in life is one of the greatest gifts you can give.
As part of our 150th anniversary, we’re aiming to change 150 lives—or more. Any support that helps us reach that goal genuinely makes a difference. If you can help it would honestly mean so much - thank you!
