Dr Jim’s Strongman Challenge

Jim Ropner is raising money for Alzheimer's Society

Bristol’s Strongest Man · 21 March 2026

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

At the ripe old age of 49, I’ve decided to get out from behind my desk at the surgery, and have entered myself into Bristol’s Strongest Man 2026. Whilst I’m firmly in the beginners category the weights involved will be a real challenge. Having trained in my garage for a few years, I’m ready to test myself against the best that Bristol has to offer!

The competition events include deadlift, sandbag medley, axel bar overhead press, sandbag to shoulder, and Dinnie Stone walk. This is my first attempt at many of these challenges.

The choice of charity mirrors that of the main event but given my clinical work with dementia patients, it seemed fitting.

I’m under no illusions that I’m going to be worrying the podium, but it's a great way to focus my training and raise money for a good cause. I really appreciates any and all support that you can offer, and I’m looking forward to a fantastic day.
