Story
My story.
As most of my family and friends are aware at the age of 17 just two weeks before his 18th birthday my brother was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This was a huge life changing experience for my brother as well as us. We had to learn very quickly how to live and deal with Diabetes, this changed my brother’s life overnight.
Fast forward 1 year exactly and I started to experience symptoms that indicated I could also have Diabetes.
My Mum contacted the doctor and within 3 hours I was in a hospital bed as my blood sugar levels were high. Then just like my brother I was told that I to had Type 1 Diabetes.
Suddenly we were weighing food, carb counting every meal and injecting several times a day. We had to start continuously monitoring our bloods day and night. We dealt with this together as a family, but it was a new way of life for me and my brother.
We have always been taught by our parents that we control Type 1 it doesn’t control us. We live a normal life and do everything other people do with just a few alterations to our day to day living. We were also told that it shouldn’t stop us from achieving our goals in life.
I would like to run the London marathon to raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes, along with raising money to support future families being given the same diagnosis as myself and my brother and to support families to learn to deal with the changes this brings.
Diabetes UK is a charity that is very close to my family’s heart.
I have spent the last few years in training for this moment, I have made fitness my way of dealing with life’s ups and downs this includes Boxing, running and attend the gym at least 4 times a week.
My brothers and I are all keen runners all around the world. Sweden, Australia and me here in the UK (and yes, we are extremely competitive.)
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
Thank you in advance for supporting me to raise £2800 for an amazing charity. Completing the London marathon is a lifetime ambition of mine and helping Diabetes UK to raise this money would make it even more special.
