Royal Historical Society: Jinty Nelson Teaching Fellowships

King's History is raising money for Royal Historical Society

Symposium · 20 May 2025

The Royal Historical Society represents history as a discipline and historians as a group. It promotes the vitality of historical scholarship through support for research and publication, and advocates best practice in history teaching in universities and schools. It provides a forum for all historians to meet and exchange ideas, and supports and encourages early career historians. It encourages, facilitates and supports work towards greater equality, inclusion and representation in historical practice, research and teaching.

Story

On Tuesday 20 May, historians gather at King's College London to hold a memorial event for Dame Jinty Nelson FBA. In addition to her distinguished teaching and research career at King's, Jinty was also President of the Royal Historical Society between 2000 and 2004 - the first woman to hold this position.

Jinty's huge contribution to the Royal Historical Society is today remembered with the annual award of Jinty Nelson Teaching Fellowships by the Society. Fellowships support historians who seek to introduce new approaches and initiatives to their teaching—and for which funding of up to £1,250 is required.

The Royal Historical Society welcomes donations from those who remember Jinty and want to continue her legacy to support additional awards for the 2025-26 round of Teaching Fellowships. The current call for applications runs between 5 May and 11 July 2025.
