Channel Swim

Mencap wants a world where people with a learning disability gain an equal right to choice opportunity and respect. We believe that support for the families and carers of people with a learning disability is vital to achieving our vision

Story

JJ is swimming the channel in August! Yes, you read that right ….

The endeavour of swimming the channel is a formidable challenge that requires not only physical prowess but also mental resilience. For JJ, a 14 year old neurodivergent boy with various physical disabilities, this undertaking represents not merely an athletic ambition but testament to his determination and inclusivity in sport at Beech Hall.

JJ’s decision to undertake this challenge demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to overcoming obstacles that extend beyond mere physical limitations and we couldn’t be prouder.

JJ began this journey in September of 2024 when he decided to train with the school Channel Swim Squad. This was a huge undertaking, requiring 4-5 swim sessions per week and an introduction to open water swimming. He has been consistently determined and brave, evidenced perfectly when he swam in Salford docks in 4 degree water, with an air temperature of 0 degrees. No wetsuits allowed!

Despite having to take 8 weeks out with a dislocated shoulder, JJ has qualified and will be swimming the channel as part of a 6 person junior relay team in August of this year.

Swimming the channel is a huge achievement for any young person and we couldn’t be prouder of JJ and his fellow team members.

Your support for JJ and Mencap is hugely appreciated ❤️
