Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity is doing great things to improve the health and happiness of every patient in all 13 hospitals across the region, as the official charity partner to Bristol NHS Foundation Trust

Story

Bristol-based adventurer and former hot air balloon operator Jo Bailey is preparing to attempt a unique world record in a tethered hopper balloon, in just over a year after surviving a series of life-threatening emergency surgeries that left her with a permanent ileostomy.

Jo, who previously owned and operated one of the South West's best-known hot air balloon businesses, Bailey Balloons, is planning "The Paloma Ascension Challenge" – an attempt to achieve the highest number of tethered hopper balloon ascents within one hour- in aid of the ICU Pathways Course at Southmead Hospital.

What makes the challenge even more remarkable is that Jo will undertake it while living with a stoma, using the event to raise awareness and inspire others facing life-changing surgery, illness, disability, or loss of confidence.

"I nearly lost my life several times during my illness," said Jo. "There were moments when I wasn't sure I'd ever get home, let alone return to the world of ballooning. This challenge isn't really about records. It's about showing people that life doesn't end after major surgery. It can still be adventurous, fun and full of possibilities."

I was lucky to take part in the ICU Pathways Course months after leaving hospital and was and still is a tremendous help to me.

Jo documents her recovery journey through The Paloma Diaries, where she shares the realities of life with an ileostomy, recovery from major surgery, and finding humour and positivity through difficult circumstances.

The proposed world record attempt to take place at the Bristol Balloon Fiesta will feature a series of tethered ascents and descents in a hopper balloon and may include a variety of costume changes!
