Story

This year, I am taking on the challenge of running the Cardiff Half Marathon in support of St Michael’s Hospice, in loving memory of my grandad, Geoffrey Payne, who passed away there in 2016.

Anyone who was lucky enough to know my grandad will remember just how kind, patient, and loving he was. He played a huge role in my life while I was growing up — stepping up as chief horse lorry driver, dedicated pony watcher, and my number one supporter throughout my teenage years.

When my pony pursuits came to an end, his support never wavered. He regularly made the long drive to Aberystwyth to watch and support me playing rugby. Having such a positive male role model in my life helped shape me into the person I am today, and I will be forever grateful for everything he did for me.

In late 2015, my grandad discovered lumps on his back. Biopsies confirmed skin cancer, which later spread to his lymph nodes. Following an unsuccessful operation, the cancer progressed rapidly and he was given a terminal diagnosis. When he was transferred to St Michael’s Hospice for palliative care, our family felt an immense sense of relief. We had heard from others just how incredible the care was there — not only for patients, but for families too — and our experience was no different.

My mum and aunty were able to stay with him around the clock during his final days, supported by the compassionate hospice team, with regular visits from family and friends. The memory that has stayed with me the most, and the reason I have chosen to fundraise for St Michael’s, is the care we received as a family after he passed. From being able to see my grandad treated with dignity and love, to being supported as we grieved together, the compassion shown to us made an unbearable time just that little bit more bearable.

Now, nearly 10 years on, 2026 feels like the right time to honour my grandad’s wonderful life and (hopefully) raise lots of money for this incredible charity. Training for the Cardiff Half Marathon won’t be easy — especially with two little ones demanding my attention alongside a busy work schedule — but I’ll do it for you, Grandad, just as you always showed up for me.
