Ultra Comedy Cardiff 22nd June 2025 · 22 June 2025 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Hello! I'm finally biting the bullet and doing some stand-up comedy, and just to add to the pressure, there's a charity element involved!

Every week for the next month or so, I'm attending some group training sessions that I imagine are kind of what therapy is like, except we learn how to turn our trauma and anxieties about the state of *waves hands* everything into neatly-packaged and hopefully funny stand-up sets.

Then, on Sunday 22nd June, we'll all be performing in a big showcase thing at Steinbeck & Shaw. There's a fair few of us doing it, and everyone is bringing a fair few people, so if I'm rubbish there will be plenty of folks to witness it. Great!

If you fancy popping along, you can search 'Ultra Comedy Cardiff', find the June date and buy a ticket to come. In the basket there's a box asking who you're coming to see so please do that if you want to turn up unannounced and be a surprise supporter/menace.

If you're not coming because you're not in Cardiff that weekend (fair), think the tickets are too spenny (honestly, what isn't nowadays?), or you're my family (you can come see me in future, but please not my first ever one) then chucking us a fiver on here makes me feel all loved and it's for a great cause.

Look, I know it's not doing a marathon or skydiving, but it's a bit more effort than growing a moustache.

THE SERIOUS BIT:

I've seen first-hand how dementia/Alzheimer's can affect someone and those around in real time over the last 20 years or so, as my Bampi has it.

Seeing the swift degradation of his mind and body in the last few years especially has been heartbreaking, and I'm honestly terrified of anyone else in my family getting it.

On a wider level, the figures of how many people have it and could develop it is shocking, and it's not something I'd wish on anyone. Alzheimer's Society funds research and support, so I couldn't think of a better charity to choose.
