Joe & Jack’s mountain hike

Hike to the top of Mulhacén · 4 April 2024
For many thousands of people, the last 3-4 years have been challenging with many life changing moments. The years of Covid made me feel like I have taken an enormous physical and mental beating. Like many, I have always found it extremely difficult to talk about my worries and concerns.
In 2020 my dad, who so many people know and enjoyed his endless conversations, passed away. My reaction was to block any emotional feelings out and constantly push any thoughts to the very back. There’s only so much space at the back! By the end of 2022/23 this all became far too much and had a poor effect on every aspect of my life, friendships and relationships.
This year (and years to come) I have decided to set myself different challenges to help raise money for dementia UK. My first challenge is going to conquer a mountain! Mulhacen stands at just under 3,500m and is the highest mountain in peninsula Spain.
This may not sound the most impossible challenge, but my mountaineering skills are slightly above novice. However, Jack GB AKA the “Stirling Bear Grylls” is! Jack and I were flatmates during the Covid lockdown period. Whilst Jack is also a tennis coach living in Scotland, he is also a keen amateur adventurer, who has recently thrown himself into unique physical and mental challenges, including a journal of his solo cycle through France.
For years we have discussed different challenges, but it’s only now where any of our ideas have come into fruition.
Any donation would be greatly appreciated and I will be updating this page and any socials with our progress between now and early April, which is when we jet set over to Spain to embark on my first charity challenge.
