Queen Eleanor Cycle Ride 2024 · 23 August 2024 to 26 August 2024 ·

The 2024 Queen Eleanor Cycle Ride takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend (23-26 August 2024) to raise funds for The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields to support their work with homeless and vulnerable people in central London.

Story

The Connection is London’s leading homeless charity.

St.Martin’s in the Field is the guiding light behind The Connection. They say:-

+ No one should have to sleep rough on our streets.

+ Everyone should get the support to find a place to call home.

Your gift will help them to do this work. Thank you.

Why I’m doing this 200 mile 4 day ride

The story of the Eleanor crosses is a lovely and romantic story. King Edward 1 (Longshanks) clearly adored his wife enough to tell her he’d get her to Westminster. She died at Harby (on 28th November 1290) 7 miles south west of Lincoln.

So he took her body to Westminster anyway and commanded that a cross be erected at each overnight stop. There were 12 stops, 12 crosses. Three are left still standing, plus one replacement at Charing Cross. They are magnificent structures, particularly the one at Geddington.

I like riding my bicycle, even at age 78, I love the idea of following the route King Edward took and that this effort can raise money for the homeless. And the Taxman can top up with an extra 25% on top – if you ask him to – is a joyful idea.
