Chiltern 50 Ultra Challenge 2024 · 28 September 2024 ·

Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I lost my mother, Shirley, this year to a rare form of Parkinson's, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). She handled her condition like she did the rest of her life, with positivity and a smile for everyone, even when her health deteriorated significantly in the latter months.

During the 5 years following her diagnosis, Mum went though many neurology, ENT and other hospital appointments with both generalists and specialists. Despite the amazing care she had from her neurologists, it was clear that Parkinson's remains an area requiring significant investment to enable us to understand fully the complexity of the various Parkinson's conditions and how to engage with Parkinson's patients.

In Mum's memory, I am doing two significant events in September:

- The Coast to Coast - I will cross England from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay - 300km and c30,000ft of ascent - following in the footsteps of Alfred Wainwright. I will aim to do this in 7 days, completing a marathon each day.

- The Chiltern Challenge - a 50km ultra marathon around the Henley area.

There are so many excellent causes out there, but having seen first hand what Parkinson's does and the toll it takes on both the individual and family, I'm grateful for any and all support you can give to help research this condition and provide a brighter future for those living with the condition.

At the end of each event I'll be raising a glass of champagne to Mum (as well as taking a dip in the sea on both sides of the UK!).

Thanks

John.
