Story
Sadly, I lost my dad — Oliver’s granddad — in January this year. He underwent bypass surgery and was back at home expected to make a full recovery but passed away suddenly a few weeks later following a cardiac arrest due to other complications.
During his time in the world‑class care of the St George’s Hospital Cardiac Unit, he was treated with dignity and respect at every stage. His stay covered the Christmas period, and the charity made it as warm and memorable as possible by providing a festive dinner and thoughtful gifts. The doctors, surgeons, consultants, and nursing staff were exceptional, especially in his final days. Ellie, Andrea, Julie, and George — part of the nursing team who cared for him — were among the most compassionate, professional, and dedicated people we have ever met. We remain deeply grateful that they were the ones looking after him with such kindness.
My eight‑year‑old son, Oliver, came up with the idea of doing a fundraising challenge in memory of his granddad, whom he misses terribly. It was also his idea that we cycle a lap of the Isle of Wight — a place we’ve visited a few times — and once he decided on it, there was no stopping him. The ferries are booked, the accommodation is sorted, and training rides are well underway. We will be attempting an up-to three-day Grand Tour style of cycling legs that will total at least 110km to match the official loop of the island. His enthusiasm hasn’t dipped for a moment. It’s a genuine challenge for him, but one I believe he can rise to.
Any donation, of any size, would be a wonderful tribute to my dad and a huge encouragement for a small boy determined to honour his granddad’s memory.
