John's fundraiser for Alzheimer's Research UK

Sponsored bike ride · 28 July 2025
To celebrate my 70th birthday, I am undertaking a sponsored cycling challenge on 28th July to support Alzheimer's Research UK, a cause deeply personal to me. A very dear friend of
ours is facing the devastating challenges of the condition and this ride is dedicated to her and her family and the countless affected by this relentless condition.
The plan is to cycle my age visiting many of the football stadiums in the North East including Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Sunderland, South Shields, Gateshead and Newcastle.
Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK with nearly one million people currently living with the condition. It’s estimated that one in two of us will be affected in our lifetime, either by developing the condition ourselves or by caring for someone who does. Alzheimer’s Research UK is at the forefront of efforts to change this reality, having funded over 1,275 research projects and committed more than £237 million to dementia research.
Recent advancements offer hope. Breakthrough drugs have shown promise in slowing cognitive decline by targeting the disease’s root causes. However, challenges remain, including the need for earlier and more accurate diagnoses to ensure patients can benefit from these treatments.
By supporting my ride, you’re contributing to vital research and helping to bring us closer to a future where dementia no longer devastates lives. Every mile I pedal is a step towards hope and a testament to the power of community in driving change.
Please consider donating if you can. Together, we can make a difference."
