Story
Reflecting, regrouping, and riding again.
Now that our TOWIE challenge has passed, I’ve had a chance to reflect and gather my thoughts.
I was persuaded to take on the Skyline London to Brighton ride once more — and I’m so glad I said yes. I first completed this iconic ride six years ago, proudly wearing my Sue Ryder jersey as rider number 2695. The cheers from the crowd as I crossed the finish line are memories I’ll never forget. 🙌
Back then, I’d recently lost over 5 stone, quit smoking, and was still managing a long list of medications. Remission from Type 2 Diabetes felt like a distant hope.
With the support of Slimming World and expert coaching from Nick Smith at Core Cycle Cycling, I trained hard — four days a week for months — and made it through. 💪

Since then:
✅ Nearly 30,000 miles ridden
✅ On my third road bike
✅ 7 stone lighter
✅ No medications
✅ HBA1C: 37
✅ Low resting heart rate
✅ Ride number in hand again — this time, 256

This time, the distance doesn’t worry me. Ditchling Beacon will be a slow and steady climb — especially with a recent rib injury — but I know I’ll get there. 🏔️
As I ride, I’ll be thinking of my parents, who are no longer here but always believed in me. Their love and support still carry me forward. ❤️
I’ll also be cheered on by my amazing wife and family. It’s a shame my lad can’t join me this time, but give it another four years — he’ll be right there beside me. 👨👩👧👦
This ride is more than just a physical challenge. It’s a reflection of resilience, transformation, and the power of support — from rolling tobacco to the rolling hills of the South Downs, from daily medications to none, from surviving to truly thriving. 🚴♂️✨
A huge thank you to John, who’s already reached his fundraising goal of £500 — an incredible achievement and a real inspiration. As John said:
“It’s not just about the ride — it’s about showing what’s possible when you don’t give up.”
Another £250 would really hit the mark for me. If you’d like to support me and the incredible work of Sue Ryder, your donation — big or small — would mean the world. Thank you for being part of this journey. 💙
