A Golf Challenge like no other · 16 July 2024

Our belief in health as a basic human right drives everything we do. That’s why we work with remote and marginalised communities to find sustainable solutions. We are African-led and therefore our understanding of the communities we work with, and the health challenges they face, is unparalleled.

Story

I’ve been involved with Amref Health Africa for almost thirty years both in fundraising and in serving on the UK Board. During that period, I have raised/donated £90 000.

Having lived in and visited Africa many times, I am acutely aware of the continent’s profound need for the services Amref delivers in medical provision, training of health workers and overall health awareness. It is also a fine advocate for the cessation of the practice of Female Genital Mutilation or Cutting (FGM/C) which it is achieving through effective dialogue with community and village leaders.

I am undertaking a challenge to generate additional funding support. I am dedicating myself to walking and playing 36 holes unaided on my club’s hilly course – Temple Golf Club at Hurley. I intend to play without rest or respite and with the moral support of my wife and son. At the age of 85, this is sufficiently daunting and might, as an appeal, be regarded as my Last Hurrah.

I will regard all donations as only being honoured by my completing the challenge in its entirety and my family will be witness as to my doing so. I have started this Just Giving page with my personal contribution to show I am backing myself. I hope you will be inspired to support Amref’s invaluable work.
