Story
In 2016 at the age of 49, my high school friend, Linda Coviello, ended her life, leaving behind her daughter and husband. That event changed my thoughts about mental health and suicide. I have focused on helping Family Services’ Samaritans of Merrimack Valley programs that strive to reduce the incidence of suicide through various prevention and postvention services. Samaritans staff provide educational support for schools, mental health providers, businesses, youth and senior centers, civic organizations, faith-based institutions, and first responders. The Samaritans hosts a support group for individuals who have attempted suicide in the past. Participants gain comfort from others with shared experience and discuss topics such as safety planning, coping skills, self-care, and processing past events.
