Story
Our daughter Lyla Story was just two years old. Bright, joyful, and full of life. On May 3rd, 2025, she passed away in her sleep, less than 16 hours after being seen by a GP. Despite presenting multiple concerning symptoms, she was diagnosed with tonsillitis. No tests were carried out. The cause of death was undiagnosed Type 1 Diabetes, leading to Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and a gastrointestinal bleed.
Her story was featured nationally on BBC Breakfast News (4th November & 17th September), because this is not a local issue, it’s a national failure. We’re now actively campaigning for Lyla’s Law, which would make routine diabetes testing (urine and/or blood) mandatory for babies, toddlers, children, and adolescents when any of the “4 T’s” are displaying: Toileting, Thirst, Tiredness, Thinning, exactly as outlined in NICE Guideline NG18 during a GP visit. I hope this clears up where we stand and why the petition below is so urgent.
I’ve personally received over 350 heartbreaking stories and seen thousands of comments from families whose children nearly died from DKA. Just two were diagnosed at their first GP appointment. That’s not acceptable. The real rate of diagnosis in critical care for children 0-5 years is 38–45% and alarmingly rising, not the 26% figure that’s often quoted. This is frankly scandalous and must change.
I am asking all GP surgeries and healthcare settings in the UK to:
• Stock blood glucose and ketone urine dip test kits
• Display the “4 T’s” poster (downloadable via Diabetes UK)
• Share Lyla’s story across their networks
Our Local Authority has unanimously passed a motion to support Lyla’s Law and write to the Prime Minister and Health Secretary. We urge you to do the same.
By purchasing merchandise, it helps to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes, a dangerous autoimmune condition.
Lyla deserved better. If her story can save even one life, her legacy will live on.
