In memory of John Salmond
Back Onside is committed to helping young people and adults who face mental health challenges due to social exclusion, disability or challenging life circumstances. We have one aim: to promote self-confidence, raise self-esteem and unlock the potential confined within each participant.

Story

John was born on the 14th of November 1992.

He was the eldest of 3- with 2 sisters Abbey and Claire. Growing up, John was not only a beautiful boy, but also filled with personality, and never sat still. His childhood was spent in Sauchie, he attended Craigbank Primary School then into Lornshill High School. When he left school, he tried out an apprenticeship in plumbing, before his love of golf took over and decided to join Golf College. John also dedicated a number of years to serving in the army, but chose to leave to focus on raising his children.

John was a devoted dad to his four children, and his dog who he loved too. As an adult, John spent a lot of time on the golf course – both working and playing. Whether he was playing a round with friends or keeping the greens pristine, the golf course became his happy place.

Sadly, John struggled with his mental health in his adulthood, and kept his struggles to himself. In February 2024, everything became too much for John, and he took his own life aged 31. John’s family were left heartbroken with John’s loss.
