My mother-in-law, Moira, has been battling the cruel realities of Alzheimer’s and dementia for the past few years. This devastating disease has robbed her of her independence, her future, and, most heartbreakingly, her memories. She can no longer do the simple things we all take for granted—like opening a door, making a cup of tea, or even using a knife and fork. She no longer recognises familiar places, even just outside her own home.

I’ve always known Moira as a proud, incredibly intelligent, and quick-witted Scot—sharp, competitive, and passionate about sports. She has always treated me like her own son, and it breaks my heart to see this disease take so much from her.
