BirdLife International is the world’s largest nature conservation partnership and the world leader in bird conservation. We believe in a world rich in biodiversity where people and nature live in harmony. We offer that hope for the future of the planet but we need your help to achieve it.

Story

On Sunday 27 April, I’ll be running my first ever marathon - 26.2 miles through Manchester - to raise funds for BirdLife Malta.

I’m currently on sabbatical from the RSPB, assisting BirdLife Malta on their SpringWatch camp. We’re here during peak migration, monitoring and working to prevent illegal hunting as birds pass through one of the most critical stopover points in Europe.

Every day, I’ve seen the stark reality on the ground: protected birds being shot, species like Kestrel, Nightjar, Marsh Harrier, and Bee-eater targeted despite laws meant to shield them. Turtle Doves, whose numbers are in steep decline, are still being illegally hunted outside the legal season - often with banned methods and unregistered firearms. This work is only made possible by a small but incredibly dedicated team of staff with whom I feel privileged to be working alongside, supported by passionate volunteers, all working long hours under challenging conditions.

But it’s been both challenging and inspiring - and it’s why I’m running this marathon. To raise awareness, and to help fund the ongoing efforts to protect these birds in real time, where it matters most.

The money raised will help BirdLife Malta purchase the essential equipment needed for collecting the evidence needed to prosecute these criminals, pressure the government for stronger enforcement, and safeguard these vulnerable species.

While this experience has been unforgettable, I can’t say it’s been the ideal marathon training regime - long days in the field, early starts, and not much sleep don’t exactly make for a well-rested runner! But in the grand scheme of things, running 26.2 miles is nothing compared to the thousands of miles these birds travel - only to be shot for fun by criminals who treat migration season like target practice.

If you’re able to sponsor me, every donation goes directly to BirdLife Malta’s frontline conservation work. Whether it’s £5 or £50, it’ll help keep eyes on the skies and pressure on the system.

Thank you so much for your support! 🙏
