Story
In December 2023, I noticed a small lump under my jaw and thought nothing of it. When it didn’t go away and started causing a dull headache, my wife Chloe convinced me to go to the GP.
“Well, that’s not normal,” I remember the physician associate telling me, as she referred me for a scan. After an arduous diagnostic process of blood tests, cameras down my throat, and eventually a biopsy, I received the news I dreaded, but bizarrely had expected: cancer.
I was formally diagnosed with Nodular Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma (NLPHL), a rare type of blood cancer, and began treatment in October 2024.
From the moment I set foot in Barts for oncology meetings, treatment, or check-ups, I made use of the on-site Maggie’s, stopping by for a cup of tea and a chat with people who understood what I was going through. Their support became even more invaluable once my treatment finished and I was told there was “no sign of cancer” and that I was in remission. The emotions that come with hearing that are not as joyful as you might expect. They bring a whole raft of feelings and mental health challenges that are often suppressed while you focus on what’s immediately in front of you. Maggie’s offers an incredible course called Where Now? that helps people navigate life after cancer.
The course gently eases you back into exercise, offers counselling, and provides helpful tips and tools to manage your ‘new normal’. Through it, I met a wonderful group of people whose individual stories of strength and character are as inspiring as they are comforting.
That’s just one example of the incredible courses and support groups this charity provides at all of its centres.
Now, cancer-free for a year, it’s time to give something back. I’ve signed up to run the Hackney Half and do my bit to fundraise for Maggie’s.
It’s going to be tough, especially as my last half marathon was over a decade ago, when I was definitely fitter and healthier, but it’s the least I can do. Any donation, no matter how big or small, will go to a wonderful cause and will help keep me going as I get cracking with my training.
Thanks,
Jonny
