Marathon Des Sables 2024 | BHF | Jono Jamieson-Black

Marathon des Sables 2024 · 12 April 2024 to 22 April 2024 ·
My father, John Jamieson-Black, passed away in August 2021 after suffering a cardiac arrest. Beforehand in 2014, he also had a life-altering stroke. In Dad’s memory, I am fundraising for the British Heart Foundation. This charity supports medical research related to heart and circulatory diseases, helping with the development of these treatments, and giving people more time with the ones they love.
In 2010, Dad ran the Marathon Des Sables, deemed by some as the toughest foot race on earth. It is a six-day, 250km multi-day ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert where temperatures reach over 40°C, with the longest stage being 85km. As well as this, each runner is self-sufficient carrying their food, sleeping equipment and kit.
14 years later, this April, I endeavour to follow in his footsteps. The Marathon Des Sables is both a physical and mental challenge. I hope to emulate Dad’s courage, passion and selflessness that is required to complete this event and in the process learn a bit more about humility and the spirit of adventure. Each stride will bring comfort, knowing that he has tread the same path.
Any donations towards the British Heart Foundation would be hugely appreciated and your support will mean a huge amount as I battle the elements in the desert! Let’s hope I can complete this challenge and stand where Dad once stood at the finish line.
I'll be accompanied by my good friend, Freddie Maher, which will be vital for support when we inevitably encounter mental and physical exhaustion. Please check out his incredible cause here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/freddie-maher-mds2024
