Alder Hey Children's Charity takes on London Marathon 2026

Story

Our little man Logan was extremely poorly and after 2 weeks in and out of hospital was blue lighted from ‘Ysbyty Gwynedd’ to Alder Hey in the early hours of the morning. (Scariest day of all our lives: Logan’s, mum, dad, brother, sisters and grandparents). He had suspected Intussusception of the intestine. We were met by the surgical team who went through the procedure to rectify this, but after a scan it appeared to have remedied itself. We spent 6 weeks with the team at Alder Hey, Logan had a very extreme case of IGA vasculitis and had 2 more very serious flare ups whilst there. The care Logan had was out of this world, he was seen by many specialists from the Paediatric, Dermatology, Surgical, Orthopaedic and Rheumatology teams. Each department were extremely diligent and affectionate with Logan. To help diagnose and treat his disease he had 6 X rays, 3 ultra sounds, a ct scan, 2 ecg’s along with numerous blood tests (poor lad had 5 cannulas, two midline’s and daily finger pricks). He also had a skin biopsy, where Dad fainted 🤦‍♂️😳😂. Due to the rarity of Logan’s case they were determined to rule out all other conditions.

For the first 10 days, mum and dad did not leave Logan’s side. The nursing team were amazing and allowed both mum and dad to stay on the ward even providing additional sleeping facilities. We must give a big shout out to ‘Ronald McDonald house’. When a space came up we were offered and gratefully took a room in this wonderful accommodation.

The medical treatment from all the doctors and nurses were first class, but the care and compassion they showed was truly heart warming. Everybody at Alder Hey were amazing: cleaners, ward chefs, volunteers, trainees, patient liaison team, the list goes on, they all took the time to speak to Logan and check up on how he was doing. A truly caring environment.

Logan is on the mend. Six months on he is in a lot better place than he was. We still have regular visits to Alder Hey and he has a long way to go, but without the care and quick actions of the doctors and nurses at Alder Hey, we could be telling you a very different story. We are eternally grateful (more than you will ever know).

THANK YOU ALDERHEY.

I am extremely privileged to run the marathon for such a worthy cause. You will forever be in our hearts and we will endeavour to go some way to repay you for all of you have done for Logan and us.

Alder Hey children’s hospital is an outstanding and vital facility for so many children. PLEASE help us raise as much support for this incredible foundation trust.

Let’s smash the target, you never know when you will need their help.

Thank you and we remain eternally grateful
