Story
This November, my partner Will and I are taking on the challenge to support a cause that means a lot to us. Will is running a full marathon, and I'll be running a half marathon at The Run Port Stephens, all to raise funds for the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation (HBCF).
In August, my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer, and since then, the Hunter Breast Cancer team has been an incredible source of support. Their compassion, care and help have made such a difference during a really tough time.
Each year, over 21,000 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer — affecting around 1 in 7 women and 1 in 550 men. Thanks to advances in research and treatment, survival rates continue to rise, but the reality of living with breast cancer remains deeply challenging emotionally, physically, and financially.
That’s why the work of the HBCF is so important. Entirely funded by the local Newcastle community, HBCF ensures that every dollar raised stays right here in the Hunter, directly supporting locals facing breast and ovarian cancer.
Through the generosity of our community, HBCF provides practical, on-the-ground support — from private transport to medical appointments and surgeries to comfort packs, house cleaning, lawn maintenance, and more, helping ease the everyday pressures that come with treatment.
We are running to give back and to help ensure that families receive the same support, strength and kindness that we have been shown.
Every donation, big or small, makes a real difference. <3
