Chelmsford Half Marathon · 2 March 2025

Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men in the UK, 1 in 4 men from a black African/Caribbean background and 1 in 12 Asian men. Our mission is to talk to men to raise the awareness. We want to launch mobile PSA blood test units for men to get tested. Let's stop men from dying through ignorance and fear!

Story

Running a Half Marathon for Prostate Cancer Awareness – Supporting The Errol McKellar Foundation

At the end of 2023, our Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent a prostatectomy in January 2024, which thankfully removed all cancer cells. We can’t put into words how grateful we are for this outcome, but one thing that really stuck with us is how crucial awareness is in catching prostate cancer early.

One of the biggest reasons our Dad got checked was hearing Simon Jordan’s awareness campaign on TalkSport. It’s no secret that men aren’t always the best at getting themselves checked, but in this case, awareness more than likely saved our Dad’s life. We have also witnessed how our Dad’s diagnosis has encouraged other friends and family to get checked, which is something positive to come out of a tough situation.

That’s why we’ve chosen to run a half marathon in support of The Errol McKellar Foundation, a fantastic locally based charity dedicated to raising awareness of prostate cancer and encouraging men to get tested.

Why This Charity?

Errol McKellar was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer in 2010. Despite having no symptoms, he took the initiative to get tested after reading a leaflet at his GP’s office—a decision that ultimately saved his life. After his recovery, Errol made it his mission to help other men avoid late diagnoses.

Determined to make a difference, Errol offered discounts on MOT tests at his garage in Hoxton to encourage men to get a PSA blood test for prostate cancer. His initiative led to 48 men being diagnosed early, proving that a simple conversation or incentive can be life-saving.

Errol’s incredible dedication to raising awareness was recognized when he was awarded an MBE in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to prostate cancer awareness. Through his foundation, he continues to champion early detection and push for better access to testing, including launching a national mobile PSA testing unit.
