Joseph Mackrell is raising money for The Volunteer Zambia Foundation

Helsinki Marathon · 16 May 2026

The Volunteer Zambia Foundation (previously the Perfect Day Foundation) was established in 2008 to ensure the friendships formed on the sports fields of Zambia will develop to benefit further generations of sports people.

Story

Hi 😎

I will be running the Helsinki Marathon in May and I thought it might be a cool idea to raise some money for the Volunteer Zambia Foundation while I'm doing it,

I'm sure quite a few of you think its bizarre that I've decided to put myself through training for and running a marathon given my disdain for distance running, but one of the contributing factors to my decision was I thought it might be a good opportunity to raise a few quid for a cause I am passionate about,

In 2022 I was selected by my University to go over to Zambia and help the project, where I met my friend Patrick who I'll be running the marathon with (well maybe slightly behind), and was very impressed with the work they were doing in local communities to get girls in to sport,

It's a brilliant initiative involving bringing sports coaches from the UK over to Zambia to upskill local coaches through passing on our knowledge, skills and experience. This enables them plan and deliver better sessions to keep the girls engaged in sport aswell as improving their skill level,

Despite how brilliant the initiative is, the project is a little held back by the amount of equipment available to the coaches and girls in the different districts. This is why I thought it would be a nice idea to raise some money for them to purchase some additional equipment such as boots, kits, balls, shinpads etc,

I've reached out to the Volunteer Zambia Foundation who I worked alongside to see if it would be possible to have any funds raised be directly used for this, in particular for the girls in the Matero district where me and Patrick were working.

They've told me they can accommodate this which is why I have decided to set this page up and put it out to you all.

Who knows, some new equipment and my coaching expertise some of them might end up being able to give the Lionesses a game one day,

Just to give you an idea of the approximate cost of equipement in Zambia so you can see that really any donation will really help:

1 set of kits: Approx £40

1 pair of boots: Approx £7

1 pair of shinpads: Approx £4

1 ball: Approx £2.50

No problem at all if you don't fancy donating or would prefer to donate to another cause, its completely understandable,

Thanks 😊✌️
