Great North Run 2025 · 7 September 2025 ·

We are a parent led group (we are 2 mums with children of our own with life limiting diseases) created for parent/carers living with a child with special educational needs and disabilities based in the North East of England. We have set up a local community group where we offer weekly support groups, holiday play groups, parties and a Facebook group for communications, sharing information and product finds and hacks. Giving families a safe place to discuss their child, ask questions and enable families living outside of our local area an opportunity to still connect with other families in similar situations, but primarily to reduce the loneliness and isolation SEND parent carers feel in their journey. During the school holidays we host play and craft days for our families, to give them somewhere safe and accessible to go and explore the world around them and hopefully enable some form of socialisation with other families in the same situation and allow siblings to interact with other siblings – again going through the same journey. We host parties throughout the year, simply because children like ours don’t get invited to birthday parties or celebrations, so we are determined to throw parties in their honour and give them an experience every child should have. We arrange accessible days out, activities which would normally be socially difficult and create one-off memorable money can't buy trips.

Founded in 2017 by two dedicated Mam's of children with life-limiting conditions and profound disabilities, The Special Lioness has become a beacon of support and solidarity for families navigating similar journeys. The founders, having faced the profound loneliness and exhaustion of seeking reliable advice and resources, discovered each other through a Portage sensory group. This serendipitous meeting sparked the creation of a charitable organisation dedicated to transforming their personal struggles into a source of support and community for others.

Over the years, The Special Lioness has evolved into a vibrant, social, and welcoming haven for parents and carers, offering invaluable knowledge, contacts, and a friendly, slightly quirky environment. The organisation’s core mission is to foster strong, supportive friendships among parents and carers, as well as to create joyful experiences for their children.
