BASIS supports visually impaired people in Essex. We aim to break down barriers to enable equal opportunities for independent living and increased confidence. We work together to reduce loneliness and social isolation for the blind and sight-impaired in our communities.

Story

This May I’m going to be running, not to Windsor, but across West Ham land in the Hackney Half Marathon with Ellie, Vicky, John, Kath and Izzy!!

I love eating and reading comics so naturally this is quite rogue. I need some serious spurring on, so any donations would be hugely appreciated.

I’d like to raise money for three different charities, and this page is specifically for BASIS (Blind and Sight Impaired Society), a charity that supports visually impaired people across Essex. BASIS provide assistive technology and equipment, teach Braille lessons, run craft groups and fitness classes, as well as a host of other events.

The work of the charity goes beyond supporting people living with disability, where they have created a welcoming environment and strong community at their resource centre in Basildon. Their befriending schemes and events provide people with companionship and emotional support alongside the vital advice they provide. Whilst BASIS predominately supports elderly people, they also run lots of events for young kids who are visually impaired, giving them a chance to spend time with other children like them, and a chance for parents to meet other parents who are dealing with similar things to them.

All of these services are run by a small team, so any donation to BASIS is incredibly valuable.
