Story
Why?
Myself and a group of people from various RAF stations are putting ourselves to the test with a tough 24 hour hiking challenge in order to raise money for The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund - We chose this charity due to the many ways it helps service personnel (Sp) with particular a focus for us on the Mental Health aspect of the charity service personnel and their families, for a long time this has been an overlooked part of society and even more so within the military. We’re looking to raise awareness and money to go towards supporting these mental health support systems provided by the RAF Benevolent fund. We will also be supporting raise awareness the RAF Leeming Men’s Network and Support group ‘StrongerTogether’ which was created by one of our hikers so Sp can anonymously go and talk about their mental health and meet like minded people and build friendships and connections - we’re hoping to roll this out to more stations in the near future!
The challenge itself!
We will be hiking Pen-Y-Fan as many times as possible in 24 hours - my personal goal to reach the hiking challenge of Ten hence ‘Ten-Y-Fan’ as a play on words, this will be in groups of 3-4 joking at one time doing the mountain once up and down and then swapping out for a relatively short break before swapping back in, I will be joining in with these sets as much as possible to reach my goal of 10 but we’re hoping as a group to even surpass that number with the rest periods helping us out!
We will be starting our first ascent together at 00:00-8:00 Saturday 31st of August and continue for a full 24 hours until we have our total! Which means working through the peak heat of the British Summer and a maximum of a couple hour nap for sleep and limited time to eat and recover!
