The News Literacy Project, a nonpartisan education nonprofit, is building a national movement to advance the practice of news literacy throughout American society, creating better informed, more engaged and more empowered individuals — and ultimately a stronger democracy.

Story

The News Literacy Project is dedicated to empowering individuals to recognize and combat misinformation, a mission that has never been more critical, by educating individuals, particularly students, in the critical skills needed to discern credible information from misinformation. By conducting interactive workshops, developing engaging educational materials, and providing resources for both educators and learners, NLP plays a pivotal role in building a more informed public. Through its efforts, the organization aims to instill a deeper understanding of the media landscape, fostering an ability to critically analyze news sources and understand the impact of journalism on society.

In a world increasingly shaped by rising nationalism and various forms of extremism, the dangers posed by misinformation and propaganda are not just theoretical concerns but real threats that can distort public discourse and undermine democratic processes.

Misinformation often leads people to act against their own interests and those of the wider world. By educating the public on how to discern misinformation, we lay the groundwork for a future where individuals are equipped to make decisions that lead to solving global problems. Informed citizens are the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, where votes and actions are based on facts and reason, not on falsehoods and fear.

This mission takes on added urgency in the age of advanced artificial intelligence. AI technologies, while innovative and beneficial in many ways, also possess the unprecedented ability to generate convincing misinformation instantly. This new reality makes the ability to identify and question suspicious sources of information more important than ever. The News Literacy Project works tirelessly to ensure that people are not only aware of these challenges but are also prepared to face them.

By supporting this cause, you are helping to build a more informed, discerning, and resilient society. Your contribution plays a pivotal role in fostering a world where truth and transparency lead the way, enabling us all to make decisions that are in the best interest of our global community.
