Ultramarathon - 50k (Embrace Ultra Winter Wonderlust) · 22 December 2024

Maidstone & Weald Samaritans provide a 24/7 service via the telephone, email, and face-to-face. It costs around £60 per day to run the centre and all our income comes from donations that we raise locally - we receive no central funding and we have no paid staff. Registered Charity No. 1171193.

Story

This Christmas I am attempting to do something hard whilst also doing something good and giving back by running a local 50k ultramarathon on the 22nd December in aid of the Samaritans.

Each year 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health issue of some kind and the Samaritans receive a call every 10 seconds on average from those in need over the Christmas period.

For every £1 donated to Samaritans and its branches in the UK and Ireland, 80p goes on our services and just 20p is invested in raising the next £1. To give you an idea of how much it costs to run our services, £10 will cover the cost of 2 calls to our helpline from people struggling to cope, £96 could train and support an existing Samaritans volunteer for a whole year, and a donation of £500 could keep our phone lines open for one hour.

More details on how donated money is spent here.

The race I am running in support here.

This is a cause close to my heart - anything donated would be used well and much appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh
