The Al-Shifa Hospital is the only one that provides maternity services in the North Gaza and Gaza governorates in the Gaza Strip. A new hospital wing was constructed in December 2020 due to the huge needs which the old hospital was unable to deal with.

In 2019, admissions to gynaecology and maternity wards reached 28,551, causing the hospital to struggle with patients and new cases.

The health ministry is currently unable to purchase the necessary equipment to keep the maternity hospital operating and the ongoing conflict in Israel - Gaza has impacted to a catastrophic level.
